After feasting your eyes on these US-made Polka Dot Shirts from Epaulet, you might feel a bit dazed. That’s because their large polka dots, slim fit and American roll collar create an optical illusion that makes any dude wearing one look like a master of the perfectly pulled-off style risk. I’m not sure what the “BM” in HeadPorter Plus BM Check Shirts stands for, but it certainly can’t be the one thing I can think of, as these shirts are anything but crappy (yes, that was a poop joke). Painstakingly crafted in Japan from 100% cotton oxford, the slim fit shirts will last for years and years, so they’ll never make you feel like you flushed your money down the toilet (that’s two). There’s something really, really attractive about these Five Brother Heavy Chambray Work Shirts. Maybe it’s that they’re union made in the USA. Or, it could be the raw selvedge chambray fabric. For as long as Nigel Cabourn’s been making these Reversible Shirts, Cabourn stockists have been justifying their cost by claiming that it’s like you’re getting two shirts in one. And while that’s basically true, it doesn’t take much of the sting out of their $450 price tag – two shirts or not, that’s still a hell of a lot of money. Read More »

Decades before Chinatown, the Pianist, Oscar awards, and unfortunate scandals, Roman Polanski burst onto the global film scene in 1962 with Knife in the Water. The film, which only features three actors, and takes place almost entirely on a boat, became a smash hit, not only in Polanski’s native Poland, but across the world, garnering the first Academy Award nomination for a Polish film. Fifty-plus years later, and it remains not only one of the sexiest movies ever made, but also one of the best dressed. From the opening frame, the film simply oozes style. Read More »

Yup, it’s 2013, and I’m still writing about chambray shirts. But, I’d like to think of that less as an indication of how out of touch with the trends I’ve become, and more as a testament to how great these Standard Shirts from Bleu de Paname are. They’re made in France. They come in a handful of heavy cotton fabrics. And, they’re only $105 a pop. Read More »

You ever had a really good all natural peanut butter, and then you read the ingredients, and the only thing listed is peanuts, and you’re like, “damn, how’d they do that?” Well, replace butter with activewear, and peanuts with humane and sustainable Merino wool from New Zealand, and that’s pretty much exactly what it’s like wearing Ibex. Isamu Noguchi was the organic answer to a design movement otherwise defined by pronounced lines and technological advancements. One of mid-century modern’s key figures, Noguchi’s nature-inspired pieces offered a stark contrast to the clean, seemingly mechanized creations of his peers. He began his career as a sculptor in the 1920’s, working with wood, metals, stone and plaster to create beautiful shapes that balanced hard edges with curved forms. In 1947, Noguchi took on another role as a furniture designer for the illustrious Herman Miller company, producing a variety of items including what is now his most recognizable work, the Noguchi table. With so much on his plate, the artist spent most of his days in his studio. Read More »
