On the first day of my new job (yeah, I have a real job too), I wore a double-breasted jacket and chinos, and I almost got laughed out of the building. Why? Because everyone there wears denim. Every. Single. Day. Which is why I’ll be adding these Spence Slim Jeans from Ruell and Ray to my collection as soon as that first paycheck clears. Read More »

So, this isn’t a sale, persay. But, it is a chance to get some good looking, American-made clothes at a hefty discount. Operating under the motto “buy less, look better,” newly launched e-tailer Buck Mason has put together a package containing two Jungmaven tees, a Crate henley, workshirt and oxford, and a pair of Cone Mills selvedge jeans from Jacob Davis. And you get can get the whole thing for $350. Read More »

Like a lot of pieces from Engineered Garments, these Type 5 Red Selvedge Jeans aren’t for everyone. They’ve got tonal stitching instead of gold. A high rise and roomy straight leg instead of low and slim (some fit images here). A cloth patch instead of leather. The list goes on. Read More »

For some, white or natural jeans might still feel like a bit of a style risk. So, what better way to take it than with one of the most dependable denim brands around. These Natural Ladbroke Grove Jeans from Tellason are made in San Francisco out of undyed Cone Mills selvedge denim. Read More »

There’s a fine line between good washed denim and bad washed denim. The good, simply look like jeans you’ve had forever. The bad, on the other hand, are clearly fabricated to appear aged; fake creases at the crotch, bleached thighs – basically, the denim equivalent of frosted tips for your hair. That said, these Light Wash Standard Jeans from Billy Reid are very much an example of the good. Read More »

Decades before Chinatown, the Pianist, Oscar awards, and unfortunate scandals, Roman Polanski burst onto the global film scene in 1962 with Knife in the Water. The film, which only features three actors, and takes place almost entirely on a boat, became a smash hit, not only in Polanski’s native Poland, but across the world, garnering the first Academy Award nomination for a Polish film. Fifty-plus years later, and it remains not only one of the sexiest movies ever made, but also one of the best dressed. From the opening frame, the film simply oozes style. Read More »

And, just when I thought Left Field NYC’s slim-fit Chelsea Jeans couldn’t get any better, these two beauties come along and shift my whole damn paradigm (at least, in regards to their denim). Made from Cone Mills selvedge indigo canvas, and Cone Mills “Reserve” green heather-fill selvedge denim, the new FW12 Chelseas combine a stellar fit, bomb-proof American construction and some seriously cool fabrics. It’s been over thirty-five years since The Band played their Last Waltz, but their music sounds as relevant today as ever. Levon, Rick, Richard, Garth, and Robbie first came together in Canada as a backing band for established artists in the late fifties. But, it wasn’t until 1965, when the group went on tour with Bob Dylan, that they got the jump start they needed to move into the spotlight. Throughout the late sixties and seventies The Band’s free flowing, folk-meets-rock sound garnered them much critical acclaim, and left an influence that’s still felt today. Read More »

For as long as there’s been a NorthernGRADE, I’ve been a fan of it. Launched back in 2010 by Pierrepont Hicks and J.W. Hulme, the Minnesota-based event has grown from an intimate gathering of American-made-o-philes to a full-on menswear mecca. And now, it’s coming to Chicago. I’ve had the great privilege and pleasure of working directly with PPH to co-produce the Chicago premiere of the pop-up, and if I do say so myself, it’s shaping up to be quite an event.

I have a confession to make. As much as I like Left Field’s Greaser jeans – and I really do think they’re some of the best on the market – there’s one thing about them I’ve never been totally satisfied with: the fit. That’s not to say they fit poorly, it’s just that they’re a little looser than I prefer, which is actually more my fault than theirs since I have a particularly narrow lower half (humblebrag?). So, when Left Field founder, and good friend, Christian McCann offered to send over a pair of his new(ish) slim-fit Chelsea Jeans for review, I was very happy to accept. “Could this be the solution to my problems?” I wondered while anxiously awaiting their arrival. “Can I have my rock-solid construction and kick-ass materials cake, and eat it too?” Spoiler alert: yes, I can. Decades before kids were tossing Sherwin Williams samples onto their best (or is it worst?) pair of dad jeans in an effort to look edgy, there was the originator, Jackson Pollock. Pollock’s paint stains weren’t some Tumblr-inspired backyard arts and crafts project gone off the rails, they were battle scars from a never ending fight with the canvas. Read More »

…But Were Afraid to Ask.

Denim is a funny thing. On the one hand, it’s easily the most ubiquitous fabric in the United States, if not the whole of the western world. On the other, the vast majority of people who buy and wear the stuff know very little about it. Especially, when it comes to what separates good from bad. For that reason, I’ve asked a man who breathes, eats and sleeps denim, 3sixteen co-founder Andrew Chen, to show us what makes one pair of jeans, like those from his label, better than another, in this case, ones from a certain three-letter-named French brand. Though the differences may seem slight, it’s precisely those small variations that’ll keep one pair chugging along, long after another’s been reduced to shreds. Take it away Andrew.
