Inspiration is Where You Find It: Sidney Poitier

By Jake Gallagher

There are few true cinematic legends. And I’m not talking about the self-proclaimed “legends” of today’s bland blockbusters, but rather, those mythical figures that changed cinema forever. One such luminary, is Sidney Poitier. In 1963, at the height of the civil rights movement, Poitier made history by becoming the first African-American actor to win an Oscar. From there he became one of the highest grossing actors in Hollywood, with such films as To Sir, With Love and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. During the prime of his career, Poitier was not merely a star on the screen, he was also one of the town’s best dressed leading-men. Read More »

Inspiration is Where You Find It: Ian Fleming

By Jake Gallagher

Sir Ian Fleming was the sort of man that James Bond would have come across in the smoke-filled rooms of his stories. It’s easy to imagine Fleming sitting at a bar, dressed to the nines, dragging on a wispy cigarette, while sipping from a martini glass and chatting up his nightly arm candy. It only took Fleming, a former British naval intelligence officer, two months to pen Casino Royale, the first Bond book in 1952. Bond was never meant to be autobiographical, but he was certainly created in Fleming’s image. Spinning his tales of covert missions into full-blown spy thrillers, Fleming reinvented the espionage genre by making 007 as dashing as he was death-defying. And looking at how Fleming carried himself, it’s no wonder where the inspiration for Bond’s attitude and appearance came from. Read More »

Inspiration is Where You Find It: Jack McCoy

By Jake Gallagher

I’d like to think that within the hallowed halls of television’s high temple, there’s a special place carved out for Law & Order. At any given time, on any given day, I can guarantee there’s at least one channel chiming in with that unforgettable “Dun Dun” and an hour long glimpse at city crime, peppered with just the right number of witty one liners. For me, what’s always kept me coming back to the show, year after year, are the characters, and no one more so than Jack McCoy. Read More »

Unis Tate Jackets

These should have sold out a long time ago. They fit beautifully (as Unis’ clothes often do). They’re excellently made (cut and sewn in NYC’s garment district from Italian cotton flannel). And, they’re only 200 bucks (down from almost $600). And yet, for some miraculous reason, there’s still a considerable number of them left. Read More »

Post-Holiday Sales: L.B.M. 1911 at Haberdash

A sizable assortment of jackets from bloggerati favorite L.B.M. 1911 are on sale at Chicago’s Haberdash. Well over a dozen styles are available (I wasn’t kidding about sizeable), and all are now a full third off. Read More »

Epaulet Donegal Tweed Desmond Sportcoat

I once wrote that the Epaulet in-house collection is so consistently good, that “I could (and would) happily outfit myself with it, and it alone, if the opportunity ever arose to do so.” Months later, and the statement remains as true as ever. Boasting an impeccable pedigree (handmade from moisture-resistant Irish tweed by expert tailors in NYC’s garment district), killer fit (I’ve tried it on, and it really is perfect), and insanely reasonable price (well under $400), their new Donegal Tweed Desmond Sportcoat is not only a stellar take on a wardrobe staple, but also an incredible deal. Being There: Epaulet Manhattan

I finally had a chance to visit Epaulet’s new Manhattan location while I was home for the holiday, and I decided to bring my little sister along to take some pics. Unsurprisingly, the store is brimming with covet-able goodness. From the Canadian-made shawl collar sweaters, to the vast in-house shirting collection, to the just-dropped Epaulet suiting, to the exclusive Alden collabs, to the new CPO Shirt Jackets – well, let’s just say there’s a lot that I wanted. If you’re in NYC, and you haven’t already stopped in, add it to your to-do list. You’ll be glad you did. More pics after the jump.

Label Spotlight: Epaulet

It’s always the brands I feel I can’t say enough good things about, that I wind up having the most difficulty posting on. It’s because I like them so much. I wind up feeling an intense pressure (self-imposed of course) to get my writing as close to perfect as I’m capable. Unfortunately, that pressure more often results in my composing bloated, seemingly endless passages of hyperbolic praise, that I then have to cut and whittle down, so as to not look like a total shill (or pretentious bombast). In the end, what should have only taken me a matter of minutes, will have dragged on for hours – if not the whole day – and I still won’t feel as though I’ve managed to convey all I hoped to. In case you haven’t already figured it out from the title of this post, Epaulet is one of those brands. And this paragraph has taken me a very long time to write.
