Underage Instagram Users Will Be Blocked from Seeing Posts Promoting Cosmetic Surgery and Diet Products

According to Buzzfeed News, Instagram recently rolled out a new set of policies that “restrict, and in some cases remove, content that promotes weight loss products or cosmetic procedures” to users under 18 – and we here on Team Spent are all for it.

The changes went into effect last Wednesday, and while they’re being spearheaded by Instagram, they’ll “impact content on Facebook as well,” Buzzfeed reported.

“Users who are known to be under the age of 18 will be restricted from viewing posts that promote the use of certain weight loss products and cosmetic procedures, or posts that have an incentive for users to buy products or include a price.”

To actually put the policy into practice, the company plans to launch new tools “that will allow users to report a post within the app if they believe it violates the new policy.”

In a statement on Wednesday, the company’s public policy manager, Emma Collins, said that the policies were “aimed at dealing with the growing industry of influencer marketing on the platform,” also noting that they want IG to be a “positive place for everyone” and that the changes are “part of our ongoing work to reduce the pressure that people can sometimes feel as a result of social media.”

Now if we could get a grip on the whole climate change thing, the kids might just be all right.
