Following Steve Wynn’s decision to drop Tom Ford merchandise from his Las Vegas hotel after the designer refused to dress Melania Trump, Racked has published an article examining what would happen if other stores stopped carrying brands President Trump dislikes.
Though Trump has denied Ford’s claims that he was asked to dress our new FLOTUS, telling Fox News that Melania “never asked Tom Ford, doesn’t like Tom Ford, and doesn’t like his designs,” a slew of other designers, including Marc Jacobs, Naeem Khan, and Ralph Lauren, are facing backlash for both accepting and declining invitations to dress Mrs. Trump.
In almost every instance, these backlashes have been further exacerbated by the president himself, who continues to use Twitter to lambaste the brands he dislikes (such as Macy’s, who dropped his clothing line at the beginning of his campaign), and praise the ones he likes (see the L.L. Bean kerfuffle from earlier this month).
And since our new president has made it clear that he has no intention of deleting his personal Twitter account, it appears brands and retailers may now have to chose, as the article puts it, “whose wrath they want to incur: Trump supporters or detractors.”
