Post Riposte: Natural Hair Care

“I’m looking for some good all-natural men’s hair products that actually work. Got any recommendations?”

Well Kevin, as a matter of fact, I do.

I know first-hand how difficult it can be to find an all-natural hair product that actually lives up to its promises (and I’m talking about the ones that are truly all-natural here, and not just (mis)appropriating the phrase to move units). I can say honestly that I’ve tried upwards of a dozen different brands over the last couple of years, and have been less than thrilled with most of them. But, fortunately, the few good ones I have found, are really good. So good, in fact, that I will go ahead and call them better than their not-so-natural equivalents. The following are my three personal favorites, all of which I use on a regular basis, and happily endorse.

Leonor Greyl Serum de Soie Sublimateur

This stuff ain’t cheap, but hot-damn does it work. The Serum de Soie Sublimateur from France’s Leonor Greyl is basically a little bottle of miracles. More of a primer than styler, the SdSS reduces frizz while giving your hair a healthy sheen and manageable texture (I realize how much that sounds like it was copied and pasted from the LG press kit, but it’s actually a description of my own experience). Not the thing to use if you’re looking for any kind of hold, but perfect if you’re seeking instant luster. Best of all, the SdSS is completely free of sodium laureth sulfates, parabens, silicone, and is almost 100% plant derived. To order online, your best bet is probably Amazon (I have yet to see it listed for cheaper anywhere else), or, you can visit the Leonor Greyl website to find a stockist in your area.

Hamadi Shea Hair Cream

With a consistency that lands somewhere between modeling clay and vegetable shortening, the entirely natural Shea Hair Cream from Hamadi will keep your hair’s shape, for as long as you keep it in your hair. Brewed and bottled in Canada, the SHC dries with a semi-matte finish, and is the perfect thing if you’re going for a combed, well-groomed kind of look. In addition to having no artificial ingredients, the SHC is also free of perfumes and dyes, and, is 100% biodegradable. Once again, Amazon has the lowest price of all the online carriers. If you prefer to go brick and mortar, check out the Hamadi website.

Dr. Bronner’s Hair Conditioner & Style Creme

The Hair Conditioner & Style Creme from Dr. Bronner’s is so safe and natural you could actually eat it – though, I fail to see why you would ever want to. 95% organic, and entirely Fair Trade, the C&CS isn’t just a great hair product, it’s one of the most socially responsible purchases you can make. A happy medium between the LG and Hamadi in terms of strength and texture, the C&CS gives light hold, and bright shine, making it perfect for mornings when you haven’t shampooed, or, for later in the day when you’re feeling a little too flat, but don’t want to take a second shower. The C&CS comes in two scents (Lavender and Peppermint) and – perhaps its most appealing feature of all – is dirt cheap. Best price online is slightly over $10 shipped at iMedMart. To pick up a bottle in person, check the Dr. Bronner’s store locator, or, visit your nearest Whole Foods.
