Whoops: Trump’s Trade War Could Hurt Trump’s Brands

So, it turns out that Trump may not have totally thought through this whole trade war with China thing: CNBC and ABC are reporting that his newly imposted tariffs could adversely affect the pricing of his and his daughter’s products.

According to ABC News, the “latest round of tariffs on products from China proposed by President Donald Trump could double the price of ‘Make America Great Again’ hats.”

“[David Lassoff] told ABC News his company, IncredibleGifts, typically imports the red hats from China and embroiders them in the U.S. But now the company may have to complete both tasks in the U.S., which could raise prices significantly.”

Meanwhile, CNBC is reporting that “many of the handbags made by Ivanka Trump’s clothing and accessories company are made in China and will likely face the new 10 percent tariffs if [they’re] taxed like other leather bags subject to the new trade penalties.”

The Ivanka team has remained predictably mum on the matter. When asked for comment on “whether the company supported or opposed the tariffs, or what impact the tariffs could have… a spokesperson for Ivanka Trump who asked not to be identified by name said [the brand] is held to the same standards as other companies in their category.’”

So now what happens now? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe an executive order that makes Trump-branded products exempt from the tariffs. Maybe the trade war will be called off entirely. At this point, only our new Russian overlords know for sure.
