Well Spent X Woven Society

A new e-commerce site launched a few weeks ago, and it’s called Woven Society. In their own words, Woven “believe[s] you can make smart purchasing decisions instead of reacting to the latest trend, [and that] a product should last as long as you want it to.” Clearly, concepts I can get behind. Anyway, the founders of the site asked me to curate a sale for them. Read More »

Native(X) Wasco Totes

There’s a lot to like about the Wasco Totes from Native(X). They’re great looking (designed in collaboration with Native American artist Nathaniel Wilkerson). Go Local: Winter Session

Photos by Nathan Michael.

I first learned about Winter Session from the founders of local apparel consulting group Single Needle. We were having coffee together, when one of them, noticing my Filson bag, told me I should give the brand a look, as their stuff was similar. To be honest, I was a little skeptical. Up until that point, I hadn’t come across any truly impressive Chicago makers. That Winter Session was not only making here, but also supposedly producing goods on par with Filson’s, well it was a little hard to believe.

A Closer Look: Southern Field Industries Waxed Tote

I have a lot of bags. Probably more than I actually need. However, I always argue that each bag I own serves a different purpose. Beach bag for the beach. Weekender for the weekend. Rucksack for the, um, rucking? Anyway, the one thing I’ve been missing, at least, according to my logic, is a basic every day bag. Something that’s comfortable, always looks good, and that I can use all year long. Well, thanks to the kind folks at newly launched Japanese bag brand Southern Field Industries, and their absolutely stunning Waxed Tote, I am missing no more.

Doug Johnston The 200 Bag

The 200 Bag from artist Doug Johnston is made out of 200 feet of cotton sash cord (hence the name) and high-strength, abrasion-resistant thread. Utilizing “an old crafting technique in which rope or cord is coiled and stitched to forms bowls and baskets,” the uniquely handsome carryall is as tough as it is functional, and, according to Johnston, “will only get better with age and use.” Read More »
