Finisterre Coho Sweatshirts

When is a sweatshirt, more than just a sweatshirt? I don’t actually know the answer to that, as these are definitely just sweatshirts. But, they’re really, really nice ones. Handcrafted in an ISO 9001 certified factory in Portugal from Oko-Tex 100 certified 100% organic cotton (so many certifications!), the Coho Sweatshirts from Finisterre are as comfortable as they are well made, and as eco-friendly as they are good-looking (so many as-blank-as-they-are-blanks!). TWOTHIRDS Sabon Cardigan

Fun fact: not only is organic cotton less harmful to the environment than conventional cotton, it’s softer too. In addition to being highly poisonous (to everything), chemical pesticides also break down cotton’s fibers, significantly reducing their smoothness. Organic cotton, however, has all its fibers intact, giving it a much silkier hand. Which makes it ideal for products like the Sabon Cardigan from San Sebastian’s TWOTHIRDS (took a minute, but I got us there). Read More »

Reigning Champ Polartec Baseball Jacket

Typically, I’m not a fan of polar fleece. But, if any garment could convince me to give the fabric a second chance, this is probably the one. The Polartec Baseball Jacket from Reigning Champ is expertly crafted in Canada from 100% polyester Polartec Thermal Pro. Touted as Polartec’s most “technically advanced” fabric, Thermal Pro is breathable, quick drying, machine washable, and, has “the highest warmth-to-weight ratio of any fabric Polartec has ever offered.” Sounds pretty good, actually. Heritage Research USN Deck Clip Jacket

So yeah, this is totally out of my price range. But, I’m still happy to drool over it for a sentence or two. The USN Deck Clip Jacket from English brand Heritage Research is made from a heavy-weight marled cotton blend. Based on US naval outwear from the 1940s, the jacket features a shawl collar, metal clip fastenings, “fluted bluff” pockets on the hip, and an updated-for-modern-audiences slim fit. Read More »

Reigning Champ Shawlneck Pullover

Top four things about the Shawlneck Pullover from Reigning Champ counted down: 4) It’s made in Canada by CYC Design, a company that’s widely considered to be one of the best sweat manufacturers in North America. 3) The fabric is an exclusive recycled cotton-poly blend, that’s both heavy-weight and environmentally friendly. 2) The fit’s slim, and the details are minimal, so it’ll wear just as well with a button down as a tee. And 1) Look at it. Nice, huh? Read More »

NorthernGRADE: Left Field NYC AW11 Crossgrain Crews

Most of my day was spent hanging / helping out at the Left Field NYC booth, which provided ample opportunity to ogle the label’s fantastic new AW11 Crossgrain Crews. Some nice updates have been made to the previous model, including changing the fabric to a heavy-duty, 100% cotton terry and adding a v-stitch at the neck. Like pretty much everything else I’ve posted this week, these still aren’t online yet. But, they will be very soon (along with a just-as-nice hooded version). Read More »

Heritage Research Academy Crew Sweatshirt

Borrowing designs from the past is easy. Matching the quality of construction is not. And that’s precisely what sets England’s Heritage Research apart. Working exclusively with small, artisan-run factories, the label produces a broad range of garments that are as historically accurate as they are handsome. The Academy Crew Sweatshirt is cut and sewn in the US from a 10 oz. cotton / poly blend. Read More »

Heller’s Cafe Indian Pattern Sweatshirt

This thing is still pretty pricey, even on sale. And, admittedly, the print is a bit trendy, so whether or not I’ll still like it two seasons from now is debatable. All that said, the Indian Pattern Sweatshirt from Heller’s Cafe might very well be my favorite sweat of the year. Designed and crafted in collaboration with the expert jean-makers at Warehouse, the sweat is woven, cut, sewn and printed in Japan (so basically, plan on it lasting longer than, well, you). Farm Tactics Slub-Cotton Sweatshirt

The Slub-Cotton Sweatshirt from Farm Tactics is made in California from 100% cotton slub yarn (makes sense). In addition to providing the sweats with an incredibly soft hand, the slub-cotton also gives them a unique, almost downy texture, which is nice little feature to set them apart from the herd. Additional details include a v-stitch at the neck, side panel construction, and ribbed cuffs and hem. Three colorways are available, and the price per is pretty good. Read More »

Reigning Champ Pastel Crews

There aren’t a lot of items I see and think, “man I’d really like to wear that draped over my shoulders with the sleeves casually knotted at my chest,” but that was pretty much my first thought after seeing the Canadian-made Pastel Crews from Reigning Champ (and, suddenly I’m feeling very self-conscious). Coming in colors most would associate with those cigars new dads hand out to celebrate the birth of their babies, the sweats are a great option for anyone wanting to bring a little blue-blood style into to their warm-weather line-up. Archival Clothing x Columbiaknit Sweatshirts

In case you missed the announcement, Archival Clothing has just replenished its stock of Columbiaknit Sweatshirts. Designed and crafted in Portland, OR the crews are made from a mid-weight, 9.2 oz French cotton terry, and come in two colorways and a wide range of unisex sizes. Details include a ribbed V insert at the neck, chain-stitching on the neck tape and waist ribbing, flat-lock stitching everywhere else, and a nice slim fit. Read More »

Post Riposte: Workout Gear

Reader Jesse recently wrote:

Hey man, I was wondering if you had any recommendations for US-made workout gear. I’m about to launch into my yearly spring scramble to get in shape for summer, and would like to do so without wearing anything made in a sweatshop.

Jesse, thanks for getting in touch. As it turns out, there’s actually a surprisingly large number of active apparel co’s that manufacture their goods in the US. Some of my personal favorites are below.

Left Field Crossgrain Sweatshirts

Though the claim that today’s goods are not as well-made as the goods of yore may sound somewhat curmudgeonly, there actually is a fair amount of truth to it. In certain respects, products really were better “back then.” Case in point: the Crossgrain Sweatshirts from New York’s Left Field NYC are modeled after Champion crewnecks from the 1950s. During that period, Champion began constructing their sweats with the grain of the fleece running horizontally, instead of vertically (ie, crossgrain), so as ensure they would keep their shape despite repeated wear and/or washing and drying. The Makers: Left Field NYC

“It’s just me.”

At first sight, Left Field NYC founder Christian McCann is kind of an intimidating dude. Tall, a boxer’s build, countless tattoos; basically exactly what you’d imagine – or hope – the man behind his brand would look like. However, once you get him talking, it doesn’t take long for the menace to fade. Beneath the tough exterior is one of the most genuine and thoughtful guys in the menswear business. It might seem funny to say, but he’s actually a lot like his clothes: earnest, pretense-free, and steadfast. Despite our being over an hour late, he warmly welcomes my sister and I into his studio. “I’m sorry you had such a hard time finding the place,” he says. “I’m glad you guys are here.”
