Norse Projects Sigfred Knits

There’s kind of Goldilocks’ porridge thing going on with the Sigfred Knits from Norse Projects. They’ve got casual sweatshirt details, but are made from a dressy sweater fabric. Their fit is slim, but not in a painted-on kind of way. And their price, though not exactly low, for EU-made isn’t all that high either. In short: they’re just right. Read More »

SNS Herning Version Sweaters

Believe me, I’m as sick of the word “timeless” as you are. But, when describing a sweater that’s been in production since 1960, and looks just as good now as the day it came out, well, few other descriptors seem as apt. The Crewneck and Cardigan Version sweaters from SNS Herning are meticulously woven, cut and sewn in Denmark from medium-weight Merino wool. Read More »

Aran Shawl Collar Cardigan

I can’t decide what I like most about the Aran Shawl Collar Cardigan. Is it the design? (Cable knit, hip pockets, leather buttons). Is it the quality? (Handmade in Ireland from 100% pure new wool). Or, is it the insanely low price? (90 bucks). You know what, let’s just say it’s all great and call it a day. Read More »

Hessnatur Organic Cotton Sweater

As much as I love wool, there are definitely times when I can do without the itchiness. Enter the Organic Cotton Sweater from Germany’s Hessnatur. Handcrafted in a Fair Trade certified factory in Turkey from low-impact dye treated 100% organic cotton, the sweater offers all the warmth of wool, but with an infinitely softer hand (also, could it be more socially responsible?)(a Friends reference? really?). Howlin’ by Morrison Birth of the Cool Sweaters

The Birth of the Cool Sweaters by Belgium’s Howlin’ by Morrison (I’m sorry, but that is a ridiculous amount of words for a brand and item name), are cut and sewn in Scotland from pure Scottish lambswool. The Makers: Outlier

“We’re fabric nerds.”

Outlier co-founders Abe Burmeister and Tyler Clemens aren’t exactly the type of guys you’d expect to start an active apparel label. There’s nothing overtly sporty or jock-ish about them. In conversation, they come off much more NPR than ESPN. And yet, the two have managed to launch a brand that’s quickly becoming one of the most respected in the industry. Why? Because Burmeister and Clemens have succeeded where no one else has: they’ve made high-performance apparel that’s comfortable enough, and handsome enough, to wear in non high-performance situations. In other words, clothing that’s perpetually appropriate, regardless of where you are or what you’re doing.

NorthernGRADE: Dehen 1920 Shawl Collar Cardigan

I’m happy to report that this year’s NorthernGRADE was a rousing success. And to keep the magic alive just a little bit longer, I’ve decided to use this week’s blog posts to spotlight some of my favorite products from the event.

Not only is the Shawl Collar Cardigan from veteran Portland, OR knitwear-maker Dehen 1920 beautiful, it’s also one of the heaviest sweaters I’ve ever come across (seriously, the thing weighs multiple pounds). Another nice feature is that it’s almost entirely water repellent, thanks to the natural lanolin coating of the worsted wool used in its construction. Unfortunately, these won’t be available for purchase for another month or so, but, based on the samples they had at the show, I can assure you they’ll be well worth the wait. Read More »

North Sea Clothing Expedition Sweater

With literally dozens of shawl collar sweaters to choose from these days, what sets the Expedition Sweater from North Sea Clothing apart? Firstly, the design is based on sweaters issued to the Royal Navy during during the First and Second World Wars, so it has a much more authentic fit and appearance (in case that matters to you). Secondly, the new pure wool yarns that it’s made from still have their natural lanolin coating, which makes the sweater almost fully water repellent (you have to admit, that one’s pretty cool). Label Spotlight: Unis

It’s not often that the head of an established and widely respected clothing label will take time out of their day to thoughtfully address the concerns of an anonymous naysayer. So, when Eunice Lee, founder of Unis, did just that last month, the response (at least amongst the menswear bloggerati) was big. Very big. I jokingly told her after the fact that she had struck upon one of the greatest marketing schemes of all time: five minutes in the comments section for a bounty of free press. However, as much press as her joining the discussion brought her, it was no PR ploy. Lee’s reply came from a place of wanting to set the record straight. She wasn’t trying to shame the commenter, or talk up her brand, she was telling it like it is – giving someone outside of her industry the inside scoop, as only a person who pours their heart and soul into their craft can.

Naked & Famous Slim Cardigan

The Slim Cardigan from Naked & Famous is made in Canada from a medium-weight, 100% cotton terry fabric. Woven in Japan on vintage circular knitting machines (which take close to an hour to produce a single meter!), the fabric has an uneven, almost nubby texture, giving the sweater a distinct and unusual look. Additional features include a v-neck, reinforced collar, and tonal stitching throughout. Two colorways are available (gray and pink), and Vancouver’s Four Horsemen Shop has them both. Read More »
