4sight Adventurers Sunglasses

I can’t decide what’s more amazing about the Adventurers Sunglasses from San Fransisco’s 4sight: that they’re 100% made in Italy, yet cost a mere $49, or, that for every pair purchased (for a mere $49), a set of corrective lenses is donated to a person in need. You know what, let’s just say they’re great all-around, and call it a day. Nine color options are available (some vibrant, some subdued), and quantities are apparently very limited, so act now to get yours before they sell out. Read More »

Deadstock O’Malley Sunglasses

In other crazy-low priced eBay find news: seller All American Deadstock is offering a nice selection of NOS “Classic O’Malley” Sunglasses. Though originally made somewhere between the 1980s and 90s (can you believe that 1990 was 21 years ago? Isn’t that insane!), the classically-styled glasses are still in pristine, unworn shape. Despite their age and condition, the seller is only asking for a piddly $12 per (and the shipping is free), making them way cheaper than any crap you’d pick up at Urban Outfitters (and probably far better made too). With Benefits: Summer Sunglasses

With Benefits is a series featuring for-benefit companies — for-profit models that inherently benefit social causes — written by Janette Crawford, founder of the consistently excellent ethical fashion daily Fashion Loves People.

One out of five people in the world can’t see clearly – that’s 1.3 billion people living without proper vision. Earlier this month, you most likely heard about TOMS revealing its next one-for-one product, sunglasses. Inspired by this announcement, I decided to round-up my four favorite brands offering sight to people in need, in exchange for slick new shades.

American Optical Safety Glasses

Just in time for summer, Los Angeles’ Driftwood has added a selection of deadstock, US-made American Optical Safety Glasses to its online store. Multiple sizes of both the classic gray and green lens models are available, and each is priced at $72 (plus free shipping), so basically cheaper than if you found ‘em used on eBay. Stock, of course, is extremely limited, and likely to sell out quick, so head over to Driftwood now while the getting’s still good. Read More »

Happenings: C.H.C.M. Shop

It’s a funny thing, the “Heritage” trend. As anyone in the fashion industry (er, I mean ’style’ industry – got to keep it menswear blog appropriate) will tell you, everything that’s old will eventually be new again. And so, the current popularity of utilitarian garments from the 1930s – 1950s amongst the modern non-utilitarian set isn’t all that shocking. What’s funny, though, is that the items that make up the trend were never intended to be fashionable. They were designed and built purely for functionality. That’s why they’re still around, decades after their inception. That these items are now a part of a trend, and, as such, suddenly have a shelf-life – well, it entirely defeats their purpose.

Anglo American Optical Eyewear

I don’t actually need glasses. I’ve always had above 20/20. And I also don’t condone the wearing of glasses for purely fashion / aesthetic reasons. I mean, why not walk around with fake crutches too, while you’re at it? All that said, I can still appreciate a good pair, and, if my parents’ eyesight is any indication, that appreciation will most likely turn into need in the next 10 to 15 years. So, consider this post me planning ahead. England’s Anglo American Optical (not to be confused with America’s American Optical), have been churning out top quality eyeglass frames for over 120 years. Welcome to the 2010 Well Spent holiday gift guide. I’m trying something a little different this year: 25 gifts, all socially responsible, and all under $25. Small things, but (hopefully) a bit more substantive and enduring than your typical stocking stuffers. Here’s to a healthy and sane holiday season.
