Reigning Champ Recycled Fleece Crewneck

Every now and then I’ll come across an item that so perfectly encapsulates my own tastes and wants, I’m rendered tongue-tied (finger-knotted?). It’s not so much a lack of things to say, as it is too much to communicate at once (ie, where do I even start?). When this happens, I have found the most effective way for me to relay all that needs be said is to make a list, as my adrenalized state has left me no good for prose. So, with that, I give you my list of what’s great about the Reigning Champ Recycled Fleece Crewneck. Read More »

With Benefits: Nau

With Benefits is a series featuring for-benefit companies — for-profit models that inherently benefit social causes — written by Janette Crawford, founder of the consistently excellent ethical fashion daily Fashion Loves People.

I’m told that the founding of Nau went something like this: a small group of do-gooders (some of them ex-Patagonians) got together to launch an endeavor that, whatever it might be, would be truly world-changing. They considered the many ways they might be able to “un-fuck the world” (their original working name was an acronym of this phrase). In the end they were most compelled by the positive change they could effect through the power of capital-B Business. They decided they would start an apparel company that would change the garment industry’s paradigms on environmental impact and social good from the inside out, and launched Nau in 2007.

Matt Shallenberger Bags

Ah, the unsolicited PR email, blessing and curse of the product blogger. On the one hand, they can lead to some great discoveries you most likely wouldn’t have made on your own. On the other, the product being pitched can be terrible, and / or have absolutely nothing to do with the kind of site you run (like a paraben laden leave-in conditioner for women – true story). Unfortunately, as most bloggers will attest, the latter scenario(s) tends to more often be the case, and so it’s not without some degree of trepidation that each subject line gets clicked – just how bad is it going to be? BreadandRoses2 Soft Accessories

There’s a lot to love about Ohio’s BreadandRoses2. The brainchild of textile artist / designer Diane Wilson, the company proffers scarves, pocket squares, and bandannas made from deadstock selvedge fabrics. Decades old, and almost all loomed in the US, the fabrics – including chambrays, hickory stripes and tartans – are culled from the artist’s own personal collection, which she has spent the better part of the last forty years amassing from thrift stores, estate sales, flea markets and various now defunct uniform and textile manufacturers. Howies Buckle Belts

It’s that time again. Summer’s on its way out, Autumn’s on its way in, and the focus now is on how to get from one to the next without too quickly abandoning – or rushing – either. While that can make figuring out layers and outerwear a bit tricky (how to stay warm without looking wintery), accessories-wise the transition is much easier, or at least it can be, thanks to the Buckle Belts from Welsh brand Howies. Crafted in the UK by the expert belt-makers at Arnold Wills, the BBs are made from 100% organic cotton webbing and repurposed vegetable tanned leather scraps. Read More »

Teamwork Drifter Tote

There are two core tenets that guide the work of Michigan’s Teamwork. Number 1: sustainability is as much about being environmentally friendly, it is about making a product that is long-lasting and functional. And 2: never forget your roots. From design, to sourcing, to manufacturing, the brand carries out the entirety of its production in Grand Rapids, MI, hometown of the company’s founders. The bags, all of which are one of a kind, are made from used sailcloth and tractor tire tubes that the company gathers from in and around the area. Read More »

Glass Architect Recycled Portfolio Bag

The Recycled Portfolio Bag by Seattle based Glass Architect is a great example of upcycling done right. Crafted from locally sourced billboard mesh, the uniquely handsome carryall gives an attractive new purpose to the otherwise drab material, while still utilizing its hard-wearing industrial qualities. Versatile, durable, and weatherproof, the RPB’s features include rubberized canvas carpenter pockets and pen organizer, an adjustable shoulder strap and an industrial-strength YKK zipper, all of which is sewn together by hand in the United States. Recession Rags Navy Linen Shorts

After getting a bit too seasonally ahead of myself yesterday, it seems only fitting that I feature some appropriate for the present bottoms today. The Navy Linen Shorts from New York’s Recession Rags are made entirely from repurposed dead- and over- stock materials (that includes both the fabrics and closures). Handcrafted by expert clothes-makers in NYC’s garment district, the shorts not only give new purpose to the vintage textiles from which they’re made, they also ensure that that purpose will last for years to come (fortunately, they’re styled tastefully enough to stay looking good during that time too). dutzi design White Raphia Tote

Speaking of intrinsically summery items, I’d say the White Raphia Tote by dutzi design is just about as of the season as it gets. A great beach or city carry-all, the bag is made from repurposed plastic grain sacks (think those indestructible blue IKEA bags), and finished with handwoven polyester handles. In addition to giving a second life to the discarded sacks, the bag also provides much needed work for residents of Mexico’s Yucatan region. Read More »

The Friday Find: Wings + Horns Fleece Sports Jacket

What’s on sale RIGHT NOW.

The Fleece Sports Jacket from Wings + Horns is made in Canada from a recycled polyester / cotton blend. A cross between a sweatshirt and blazer, the FSJ is a great soft-shouldered option for those cool summer nights when you want something a little more dressed up than a cardigan, but are still looking to keep it casual. Canada’s Roden Gray just knocked 30% off their remaining stock, and sizing is limited. Have a great weekend. Read More »

mau Reversible Coat with Hood

Though touted as “conceptual” clothing, the all Tyvek “post industrial folk wear” collection by mau is as wearable as it is tastefully rendered. Designed by NY based artist Marian Schoettle, the unisex outerwear and bags that comprise the range maintain an easy approachability, despite their almost installation-esque quality, thanks largely to the pieces’ overall simplicity. The ReversibleCoat with Hood is made from domestically sourced hard structure Tyvek that has been processed and softened by the artist for a more natural, cloth-like drape. Read More »

Forestbound Recycled Canvas Tote

Chances are, by the time you finish reading this sentence, the bag pictured above will have already sold. That’s the one (and only) downside to Alice Saunders’ exquisitely crafted Forestbound bags – they can be damn hard to get your hands on. Made exclusively from salvaged and reclaimed fabrics, Saunders’ totes, weekenders and duffels lovingly pay homage to the textiles from which they’re made, with each bag retaining some mark or indication of its material’s former life.
