People Tree Oliver Shorts

The Oliver Shorts from London’s People Tree are made in Bangladesh by the Fair Trade certified Folk Collective. In addition to cutting and sewing, the Folk members also hand-weave the cotton chambray from which the shorts are made, using century old methods. Cut slim, and free of extraneous detailing, the Oliver Shorts are an attractive, no-fuss bottom option for the warmer months ahead, and, even after the exchange rate and international shipping, a pretty affordable one too. hessnatur Spring Shirting

I kind of wish hessnatur had better branding. I realize that might seem a little snobbish of me to say, but I sometimes think the co.’s website actually detracts from the clothes. The thing is, there really is no other label offering sustainable apparel that’s as affordable and well-designed as theirs. But, you have to be able (willing) to look past the sloganeering and cheesy model shots to see it. So, hopefully this post will help you to do that. Read More »

People Tree Snowflake Jacquard Cardigan

How the hell is it already mid-November? I mean, is it just me, or was it a particularly quick (fleeting?) autumn this year? Then again, maybe it only feels that way since I spent pretty much the whole season huddled over my computer (#BlogLife). At any rate, sweater weather is officially upon us, so might as well make the best of it. And the Snowflake Jacquard Cardigan from England’s People Tree is a great way to do just that. Handknit by students at the Fair Trade certified Kumbeshwar Technical School in Nepal, the sweater is made from humanely harvested wool that’s been treated with environmentally friendly, low-impact dyes. People Tree Fairisle Tank

Speaking of items I’ve only recently acquired a taste for, I’m feeling a real fondness for Fair Isle these days (and not just because of this). Fortunately, People Tree has just come out with its new Fairisle Tank, and the sweater’s looking to be the perfect itch for my latest scratch. Hand-knit from humanely harvested and low-impact dye colored wool, the FiT is made by attendees of the Fair Trade certified Kumbeshwar Technical School in Nepal (that’s right, Fair Trade Fair Isle). hessnatur Organic Cotton Cardigan

Sometimes, you need a basic that’s just that, basic. One of those dress-up, dress-down, right-for-every-season, looks-good-with-any-outfit kind of pieces. The Organic Cotton Cardigan from Germany’s hessnatur definitely fits that bill. Ethically made in Thailand from 100% Turkish organic cotton, the OCC is a baby-soft, lightweight, as basic as it gets second layer, equally suited for keeping warm in the office a-c, or being thrown over a t-shirt on a chilly summer night. And, at well under $100, not only is it totally versatile, it’s also totally affordable, so there’s no need to force yourself to settle on just one of its three perfect for any occasion colorways. Working World Alpargatas

If you’re a regular visitor to this site, then I would assume you have at least some familiarity with the TOMS shoe brand (if not, you can scroll down to the lower right-hand side of the homepage to get acquainted). While I heartily believe there’s much about the company’s one-for-one business model that’s worthy of praise, I’ve heard it argued (and rather convincingly so) that, in the long run, it may not be the most effective strategy to help those in the developing world. People Tree Adam Chambray Shirt

At this point, I feel like calling chambray “popular” is a bit of an understatement. In many ways the once utilitarian fabric has become to the ’10s what flannel was to the ’90s. Needless to say, the options for purchase are many. But, very few of those can claim the same mix of good looks and social responsibility as the Adam Chambray Shirt from People Tree. Designed in London and manufactured in India, the shirt is made from hand-woven cotton chambray produced by the Fair Trade Artisan Hut collective. Read More »
