Why Clothes Cost What They Do

A little over a month ago, newbie direct-to-consumer e-tailer Everlane, posted the below infographic on their Tumblr.

And finishing out this week of post-holiday sales is the massive bottom clearance (lolz) currently underway at Unis. Every style is on sale, and mark downs range from 30% to a whopping 50% off. The Makers: Unis

Welcome to the second installment of the Makers Series. Over the next four weeks, I’ll be taking you inside the workspaces of some of my favorite brands. Kicking things off, a visit to New York’s Unis.

“I want them to know there’s a person behind this stuff.”

Eunice Lee, founder of Unis, doesn’t mince words. She doesn’t have time to. From sourcing, to production, to her store, to wholesale, there’s not a single facet of her business she doesn’t have a finger in – and most she handles entirely on her own. On the day we met, she had spent the better part of her morning on the phone, dealing with several of her stockists, all of whom were late on their payments. When I asked why she didn’t have a showroom, or some take-no-prisoners rep to handle that, she replied, “because I want those stores to know who they’re hurting. I want them to know there’s a person behind this stuff. And that by not paying, they’re directly affecting me and the people who make my clothes.” Her sincerity was palpable.

The Friday Find: Common Projects Sale at Unis

What’s on sale RIGHT NOW.

There’s something almost cult-like about Common Projects owners. The few I’ve met swear (and usually without any prompting) that they are the greatest sneakers ever made. Well, now that they’re 30% off at Unis, I guess it’s a good time to put those claims to the test. Four styles are available, all of which are meticulously handcrafted in Italy from top quality materials. Not surprisingly, sizing is spotty (and getting spottier by the second), so if you feel like joining the brotherhood, carpe that diem and get clicking. Read More »

Unis Harley Shirts

I’ve got one of these, and I can tell you honestly, it’s an absolute beauty. Excellently made, incredibly comfortable, thick enough to work as an over-shirt, yet still soft enough to wear on its own – really, as good as it gets. The only improvement I could possibly think of would be a substantial reduction in the price – oh wait, it looks like that’s already been taken care of (see what I did there?). The Harley Shirts from NYC’s Unis are expertly crafted in Los Angeles using 100% cotton fabrics from Japan. Read More »

Unis Emmett Shorts

A surefire cure for your post-Pitti depression (like postpartum, get it?), the Emmett Shorts from New York’s Unis are expertly crafted in Los Angeles using 100% cotton fabrics from Italy. Available in a wide array of vibrant hues, the shorts, which are fashioned after – and fit just like – the co.’s much loved Gio pants, are a great way to add a bit of pop (or “sprezzatura” if you prefer to keep with the Pitti theme) to your summer wardrobe. Details include a flat front, button fly and side slash pockets. Read More »

Label Spotlight: Unis

It’s not often that the head of an established and widely respected clothing label will take time out of their day to thoughtfully address the concerns of an anonymous naysayer. So, when Eunice Lee, founder of Unis, did just that last month, the response (at least amongst the menswear bloggerati) was big. Very big. I jokingly told her after the fact that she had struck upon one of the greatest marketing schemes of all time: five minutes in the comments section for a bounty of free press. However, as much press as her joining the discussion brought her, it was no PR ploy. Lee’s reply came from a place of wanting to set the record straight. She wasn’t trying to shame the commenter, or talk up her brand, she was telling it like it is – giving someone outside of her industry the inside scoop, as only a person who pours their heart and soul into their craft can.

Unis Felix Shirts

When it comes to New York’s Unis, there seems to be a split amongst the blogeratti about which of the co.’s fastidiously crafted garments are the true stand-outs. One side says the pants. The other, the shirts. Frankly, I think they’re both right. The Felix Shirts – the label’s flagship model – are crafted in NYC’s garment district from an array of top-notch Japanese fabrics. Slim but not stifling, and short but still tuck-able, the shirts are a great go-to no matter where you have to-go (did that one work?). Read More »

Unis Gio Pants

On the list of brands I don’t own but have always been curious about, New York’s Unis is right at the top. Between the label’s consistently excellent lookbooks, steadfast commitment to American manufacturing, and high-quality / low-statement clothing, there’s a lot I find appealing. However, I haven’t been able to bring myself to pull the trigger on any of their stuff before, because, well, it’s pretty damn expensive. Thankfully, even the priciest of brands still have end of season sales. Read More »
