The Makers: LAYERxlayer

LAYERxlayer is a hard brand to pin down. Even with the seemingly endless number of style niches and sub-genres out there, there’s still no one in which the label is a perfect fit. Everything is made in the USA, and almost entirely from American components, but there’s nothing remotely Americana or capital H Heritage about any of it. The pieces tend to be heavily designed, sometimes to the point of bordering on architectural, and yet they’re still tough and functional, and not at all designer-y. Even beyond their appearance, there’s something else about their bags – something more intangible, a little tougher to identify – that just feels different.

A Closer Look: LAYERxlayer Cinch Tote

The good folks at LAYERxlayer were kind enough to send over one of their new beach-tastic Cinch Totes, and I’m happy to report that it is an absolute beauty of a bag. Meticulously handcrafted from American grown and woven denim (natural for the body, indigo for the bottom reinforcement and details), the tote is uncommonly tough, and yet, surprisingly lightweight (always a nice feature when it comes to portage, especially summer-specific). What’s most remarkable though, are the many, many details – both construction and cosmetic – found throughout. Lxl is a brand that has built its reputation on sweating the small stuff, dutifully examining every inch of their goods to find yet more opportunities for innovation. And that approach is clearly evident in the Cinch Tote.

LAYERxlayer Charter Cinch Tote

The Charter Cinch Tote from LAYERxlayer is meticulously handcrafted from American grown and woven denim and heavyweight cotton webbing. Essentially a beach tote on steroids, the bag, as the label puts it, “just looks like summer,” but, thanks to its rock solid construction and heavy duty materials, can easily handle any of the other seasons too. In true Lxl style, the list of features could make a separate post unto itself. Read More »

Label Spotlight: LAYERxlayer

While at NorthernGRADE this past September, I had a brief but very interesting conversation with Jen Guarino, president of J.W. Hulme, about how she felt the concept of patriotism was changing. We both agreed that the term had long ago been high-jacked and politicized by special interest groups. However, she maintained that in the last few years, there had been a marked increase in the number of Americans who chose to define patriotism not by politics, but by deeds. She believed that these Americans were showing their love for their country by actively supporting domestic manufacturing and business. As someone who has struggled to reconcile the current prevailing definition of patriotism with my preference to buy American, this idea had a lot of appeal to me. I liked thinking there were other ways to show my allegiance, beyond the typical and familiar. And this, in part, is why I have taken such a shine to New York’s LAYERxlayer (kind of a roundabout way to get there, but we still reached our destination).

LAYERxlayer Wayfarer Pack

Call it a corollary of the Heritage / Americana resurgence, or one (of the few) positive by-products to come from this seemingly never-ending recession, but more and more, consumers have begun placing a greater emphasis on the quality of the items they buy, and less and less, buying only for looks. While it has been a wonderful shift to behold, the increased demand for well-made goods has also resulted in a greater number of fallacious claims of “durability” and “enduring design” by manufacturers whose products are anything but. Thankfully, there are brands like New York’s LAYERxlayer to shine a light through the buzzword fog. Read More »
