Justin #798 Briar Pitstop Boot

There’s a lot to like about the #798 Briar Pitstop Boot from Justin. It looks good. It’s well-made (handcrafted in the US from full-grain leather). It’s got some nice features (double comfort insole, wide polyurethane outsole, padded tongue, fiberglass shank). And, for what you’re getting, it’s pretty affordable (around $130, plus free shipping). All-in-all, a solid mid-range boot for winter and beyond.

I don’t think I ever told you, but I bought those Thorogood wedge sole boots not long after reading about them here. You’re right, they’re fantastic! They’re incredibly well-made and comfortable. And for being made in the U.S., they’re really well-priced. I sent the company an email, and they said they were going to post it for all their employees to read.

      Ha. That’s awesome.

Yeah, I dug mine out of the closet about a week ago, and have been wearing ‘em ever since. Still my favorite boots.

On the topic of the Thorogood moc toe boots, I’m strongly considering making that purchase pretty soon. I do have one question though, that I hope you can help me out with. I live in Ohio, and the winter is long, cold, and snowy. How are the Thorogood boots in regards to water-resistance? They’re not listed as waterproof, and I’d probably apply a coat of Sno-Seal anyways, but it’d be nice to be able to gauge their performance in the snow before making the purchase.

      Hey Andrew,

I live in Chicago, which has a similarly unpleasant winter. I wear my Thorogoods for most of the season. With a pair of heavy wool socks, they’re warm enough for even the coldest days. Water protection wise, as long as you proof the leather, paying special attention to the welt, you’ll be okay. Of course, I wouldn’t recommend them for exceptionally wet days (that’s when it’s good to have a pair of Bean boots). But, for the rest of the season, they should work just fine. One downside though, is that the wedge soles suck on ice. But that’s not exclusive to Thorogood, that’s all wedges.

      Hope that helps,
